Tracking your body fat is one of the most accurate ways to measure fitness and health. Unlike weight alone, body fat percentage shows how much of your body is lean mass and how much is fat. Our Body Fat Percentage Calculator helps you estimate your body fat quickly and provides a visual chart to understand where you stand.
Several formulas exist, but one commonly used is the U.S. Navy Method. It estimates body fat based on circumference measurements.
Example (Male): Height = 175 cm, Neck = 40 cm, Abdomen = 90 cm
Formula: Body Fat % = 86.010 × log10(90 - 40) - 70.041 × log10(175) + 36.76
Step 1: 90 - 40 = 50
Step 2: log10(50) ≈ 1.69897
Step 3: 86.010 × 1.69897 ≈ 146.07
Step 4: log10(175) ≈ 2.2430 → 70.041 × 2.2430 ≈ 157.21
Step 5: 146.07 - 157.21 + 36.76 ≈ 25.62
Result: Body Fat ≈ 25.6%
1. What is body fat percentage?
It is the percentage of your body made up of fat compared to lean mass.
2. Why not just use BMI?
BMI only considers weight and height; it doesn’t distinguish between muscle and fat.
3. Are these measurements accurate?
The calculator provides a good estimate, but professional tools (DEXA, hydrostatic weighing) are more precise.
4. How often should I measure?
Once every 2-4 weeks is sufficient to track changes over time.
5. Can women use the male formula?
No, formulas are gender-specific due to different fat distribution patterns.
6. Does body fat percentage affect health?
Yes, maintaining a healthy body fat range reduces risk of chronic diseases.
7. Can I use inches instead of centimeters?
Yes, just convert all measurements to the same unit before entering.
8. Will the chart differ by age?
Yes, optimal ranges may vary slightly with age, but the chart gives general guidelines.
9. Does exercise affect body fat?
Regular exercise can reduce fat percentage and increase lean muscle mass.
10. Is this calculator free?
Yes, it’s free to use and works instantly online.
